Reversing Chronic Diseases: Healing and Calibrating Environments
The United States has an enormous burden of chronic diseases that continues to challenge the healthcare system. An estimated sixty percent of Americans live with at least one chronic disease. The symposium “Reversing Chronic Diseases: Healing and Recalibrating Environments” outlines an approach to understanding and healing from chronic diseases. Christopher M. Cirino, DO, MPH, primary care physician, author, and founder of Your Health Forum, discusses reversing disease with Michael Donaldson, PhD, biomedical engineer and nutrition scientist turned health coach.
Our bodies have an innate healing mechanism. Chronic diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and obesity represent adaptations to a form of environment. These adaptations often occur when the need for momentary stability supersedes the discomfort of an unpredictable environment: the need for stress coping takes priority over developing a healthy lifestyle. We form ways to overcome trauma by self-protective mechanisms that connect us to disease as we face uncertainty.
Finding a pathway out of chronic disease requires similar parts of our brains as creating art. By acting through imagination, we hold ourselves in the space of discomfort as we create health.
